Summary: You close your eyes and hold onto the edges of the file cabinet for dear life. *********************************************************** Proximity by Susan Frankovich ~~~~~~ You walk into the room, and he's already there. Just as you knew he would be. You pretend that you don't notice the way he's sitting at his desk or the way he's skillfully rolling two sunflower seeds between his lips. Even though you do. You hang up your coat and start rummaging through the file cabinet, purposely trying to make some noise so that he'll lift up his head and look at you. He does. You hope he can't tell by the way you're gripping the edge of the file cabinet that the beautiful intensity of his eyes has suddenly made your knees feel like jello. And yet you hope he can. You know the next thing he'll ask you is if you slept well last night and you hope that when he does, he'll stand up and move closer to you. He does. You tell him that you got a good night's sleep, while all the time you're thinking about what an even better night you would've had if he hadn't gotten that phone call that took him away from your bed. And you wonder if he's thinking the same thing. He takes another step closer and then he's right behind you, his warm breath drifting across the back of your neck. You feel a chill, yet your skin burns. He leans forward and puts his hands on top of yours, completely surrounding you. You close your eyes and hold onto the edge of the file cabinet for dear life. Then he presses his lips against the delicate skin behind your ear and whispers, "We'll try again tonight." You take a deep breath. He breathes with you. You open your eyes and finally let go of the file cabinet. He lets go with you. And as you slowly turn around in his arms and look up into those smoldering eyes of his, you say the only thing you can say... "Yes." ~end~ ~All my poems and stories can be found at: http://members.tripod.com/sfrankovich/index.html
